GWD Resources

Gender, Women, and Democracy (GWD) Resources collects together documents and resources developed over the past 20+ years by the U.S. government and its civil society partners related to policy and programming on gender, women, and democracy. It is designed to be a platform for practitioners, policymakers, and others interested in continuing the work to advance democracy, human rights, and governance alongside gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This website is coordinated by Mona Lena Krook, Caroline Hubbard, and Meg McClure, with support from the Women & Politics Program in the Department of Political Science at Rutgers University.

Gender, Women, and Democracy Resources

GWD Resources is guided by the conviction that women’s political participation is essential to building and sustaining strong, peaceful, and inclusive democracies. Moreover, the health of any democracy is linked to the ability of everyone to participate freely and safely in politics and public life.

Recent and ongoing shifts in U.S. government international assistance and foreign policy, alongside broader reductions in bilateral and multilateral funding, have changed the global landscape of research and programming focused on gender, women, and democracy. As valuable tools and publications are removed from the internet, decades of work and knowledge is at risk of being rendered inaccessible or lost.

This platform seeks to make these resources available to anyone interested in advancing gender-inclusive democracy. We welcome submissions from practitioners whose work has been - or is in danger of being - taken down from government and institutional websites. By creating a shared repository, we hope that this work will continue to inform efforts to expand women's political participation around the world.
